WAYS WE MIGHT EVOLVE
So far, this website has looked at what scientists guess will happen to the human race. This following page will be looking at some of my own guesses.
. SMALLER PUPILS
When our eyes look at something bright for long periods of time, our pupils constrict. I believe that due to all of the time we spend looking at screens, our pupils will evolve to be smaller. This would keep our eyes from getting sore after long periods of looking at our phones, computers, or other digital devices. This will mean that we have a harder time seeing in the dark, since our pupils can’t let in a lot of light. However, I don’t think this will cause us too much trouble because we spend most of our time inside in well-lit areas or outside during the daytime.
. NEARSIGHTEDNESS
Another thing that I believe will happen to our eyes because of excessive screen time is that we will become more nearsighted. In order to work to their fullest potential, eyes need to be exercised. They need to look at things that are both near to us and far away. For the most part, we don’t do this. Most of the stuff we are required to look at is right in front of us. Screens, books, and people we’re having conversations with are all things that we look at quite frequently and that are usually only a foot or so away from our eyes. I believe that, over time, this will cause our eyes to naturally only see clearly about a foot or so away from us. In 2016, an eyeglass company called Transitions Optical found that 74% of Canadians need some sort of vision correction. Due to nearsightedness, I believe that this number will increase greatly in the future until all-or nearly all-people need vision correction of some kind.
. CURVED PINKIES
Our hands were created to do many things. We use them to hold objects, to pick objects up, to move objects from one place to another. These days, one of the things that people use their hands for most is to hold their phones. Most people hold their phones by resting it on their pinkie finger and then cradling it with their four other fingers. This usually causes the hand to get sore after a while. In the future, I believe that our pinkies will bend in slightly, so that it’s easier to hold our phones for long periods of time.
